QLD Maritime Museum
An historical goldfield and a cultural gem, Queensland Maritime Museum has been a feature of the South Brisbane precinct since 1973 and is located at the heritage-listed South Brisbane Dry Dock. Visitors from all across Australia and overseas have marvelled at the museum’s extensive collection of Queensland, Australian and international maritime history. Constructed to aid in repairing and building ships, the dock was completed in 1881 and was operational until 1973, even serving as Brisbane’s first swimming pool. The World War II naval vessel HMAS Diamantina is berthed in the dry dock and forms the centrepiece of the museum. Visitors are able to examine the historic ship that hosted the final surrender of the war. She is the sole-survivor worldwide of the first 20th century naval frigates and is a national treasure. Other features of the museum include exhibits of shipping, boating, lighthouses, wrecks, maritime exploration, immigration and maritime adventure.
